Why backing feels impossible

It's not you. Backing a tractor-trailer works against every habit you have from driving forward. Here's what the guide fixes.

The trailer goes the other way

Turn the wheel right and the rear goes left. Chapter 2 gives you one rule that takes the guessing out: hand at the bottom of the wheel, move it where you want the rear to go.

Small angles grow on their own

In our simulator, a quarter turn held for 30 ft moved the rear about 1 ft. Held for 60 ft, about 8 ft. You'll learn when to correct, how much, and when to wait.

You can't see the back of the trailer

The key steps come with what each mirror should show, so you can tell from the cab whether you're on track, and when it's time to stop and get out to look.

See it before you do it

Every maneuver is drawn from above with the path of the trailer's rear, and the key steps come with the matching mirror view.

The diagrams and mirror views come from a vehicle simulator: a 53 ft trailer and a tractor with an 18 ft wheelbase, with every position checked against the cones.

Questions

Does it cover the classic or the modernized skills test?

Both. The guide covers the classic exercises (straight line, offset, alley dock) and explains the modernized version that many states now use. Layouts and scoring vary by state, so always check your state's CDL manual.

What do I get, exactly?

A 41-page PDF (4.4 MB) you can read on your phone, tablet or computer, or print. You get the download page right after payment, and Stripe emails you a receipt.

Will the distances work for my truck?

Treat them as a starting point. Wheelbase, where the tandems are slid and how your mirrors are set all change things. The drills show you how to find your own numbers in the yard.

Does it replace CDL school?

No. It's a study and practice companion. Always follow your instructor and your state's manual, and practice only in a safe, closed area.
